Normal. What is normal?
Well, first thing’s first . . . there’s no such thing as normal, and you need to remember that. However, the term is used in our day-to-day lives, so let’s pretend for now that there is such a thing as normal.
You’d think someone with Bipolar Disorder wouldn’t go hand in hand with being normal, but in actual fact, Bipolar – despite having its ups and downs – has traits that are actually normal for those with the diagnosis. Imagine you have a cold. Naturally, you’d end up with a runny nose or a cough, which is perfectly normal for one who has said cold. It works the same with Bipolar Disorder: you’re having a low day? That’s normal. It is also normal for someone with this diagnosis to suffer extreme highs and lows, and so it is normal to end up on medication that will help reduce these episodes . . . a normal occurrence for someone with Bipolar and even other mental illnesses, and you are most certainly not alone!
It can be scary, believe me, I’ve been there, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. And these emotions we feel? The worry? The meds? It’s our kind of normal! You will get through this.
