Yes, you read that right. We are going Back to the TARDIS in this epic Doctor Who and Back to the Future crossover!!!!

Bringing Back to the TARDIS to Life

The crossover fanfiction adventure I just couldn’t resist writing

There are stories you plan. There are stories you chase. And then there are stories that chase you!

Back to the TARDIS was one of those.

As a writer of The Time Traveller’s Tales, I’m always looking for new corners of the Whoniverse to explore — strange adventures, odd mashups, moments the Doctor might slip into between the cracks of canon. But this particular story was sparked not by Gallifrey or Skaro, but by something closer to home . . . a film franchise that first taught so many of us to love the idea of time travel: Back to the Future.

I grew up watching Doc Brown’s wild-eyed inventions, Marty McFly’s skateboarding heroics, and the DeLorean tearing across flaming tyre tracks. And as the Doctor Who fan in me collided with the Back to the Future fan in me, the following questions took hold:

What if the Doctor landed in Hill Valley?

What if the TARDIS met the DeLorean?

And what if something truly ancient, something that eats time itself, threatened to consume both universes?

And with that, Back to the TARDIS was born.

Why This Story?

Crossovers are tricky. If you aren’t careful, they can feel forced, like two worlds smashed together for the sake of novelty. But Back to the Future and Doctor Who? They’re almost meant to collide.

Both franchises revel in the joy and danger of time travel. Both are driven by characters who meddle with forces they only half understand. And both remind us that the past, present, and future are fragile and worth fighting for.

So the more I thought about it, the more this story began writing itself:

👉 What if Doc Brown met the Doctor — another brilliant, eccentric mind with a battered time machine and a complicated relationship with causality?

👉 What if Marty McFly, already weary from one time-warped adventure, found himself facing a danger far bigger than any 1980s bully?

👉 What if something truly ancient — the Chronovore Prime — was tearing apart Hill Valley, devouring moments and memories?

👉 And what if an even stranger entity — the Phantom of Time — stalked the streets, leaving Marty’s world frozen in place?

From there, the plot spiralled outward. The DeLorean becomes vital to the plan. The TARDIS is wounded, unable to fully dematerialise. And poor Biff Tannen — somehow immune to the Phantom’s freezing effect — stumbles into the chaos, manure and all.

Writing the Voices

One of the greatest joys of this project has been writing the characters.

It was important to me that they sound right:

  • The 11th Doctor, with his manic energy barely masking the weight of centuries. His voice is fast, clever, and sometimes heartbreakingly solemn.
  • Doc Brown, wide-eyed and brilliant, sees the universe in equations and improvisations — and watching him try to keep up with Gallifreyan tech is pure joy.
  • Marty, forever the grounded heart of the story, reacting to cosmic horrors the way any of us probably would: with disbelief, sarcasm, and stubborn bravery.
  • And of course, Biff. The wildcard. The one human variable that refuses to follow any predictable rule of time or space. His blunt idiocy and stubborn presence brings humour, tension, and yes — the perfect excuse to use the word Butthead.

Balancing the tone between the light-hearted charm of Back to the Future and the darker, more cosmic horror of Doctor Who was an enjoyable challenge (and still is a challenge, as I am still writing the book as I write this very blog!). The key was always grounding the emotional stakes: Marty just wants to save his family. Doc Brown wants to undo what’s broken. And the Doctor, as always, is trying to protect the fragile timeline of the universe — with wit, brilliance, and a sonic screwdriver.

Why I’m Sharing This Now

Reaching 100 followers on Instagram felt like the perfect moment to share this story with you all. This isn’t just another fanfic chapter. It’s one of the most ambitious and joyful crossovers I’ve written — a love letter to two franchises that shaped my love of storytelling.

To celebrate, I’ve created a mockup title sequence for Back to the TARDIS. It’s designed to capture the vibe of the story. It’s not an official video, of course — just a fun way to bring my story to life and tease what’s coming.

    So What Does Come Next?

Back to the TARDIS will unfold as a feature-length story, albeit separate from The Time Traveller’s Tales series.

    In the chapters ahead, expect:

✅ More wild temporal mechanics as the DeLorean and the TARDIS must work together.

✅ New locations as our trio (plus Biff!) hunt for the origin of the Chronovore Prime.

✅ Encounters with moments of lost time, memory traps, and paradox storms.

✅ Emotional moments as Marty confronts the cost of messing with time yet again.

✅ And, of course, manure. Because it wouldn’t be Back to the Future without it.

    Final Thoughts

As a writer, there’s no greater joy than letting two beloved worlds collide and watching what happens. Back to the TARDIS is my way of celebrating the magic of both Doctor Who and Back to the Future — and of sharing that joy with you.

Thank you all for being part of this journey. Your support has helped The Time Traveller’s Tales grow beyond anything I imagined — and there’s so much more to come inside AND outside of the ‘one Doctor Who story a month’ phenomenon.

So hop aboard. The flux capacitor is fluxing. The vortex is calling. And as the Doctor might say:

“All of time and space . . . and Hill Valley, too.”
